Interpret your idea or concept of “peace” and “peacebuilding” through entries in three formats: song and music video, infomercial, and poster.

Theme: Kabataan, Tayo Naman!

About PEACEtahan

Sulong CARHRIHL has lined up a series of activities consistent with its goals of building a culture of peace. One such activity is PEACEtahan 2008. Conceptualized this year, PEACEtahan 2008 is a set of activities spearheaded by the Sulong CARHRIHL Youth Network which aims to raise awareness on peace, human rights issues and international humanitarian issues among the youth.

Sulong CARHRIHL and its partner student organizations are organizing the event with the theme Karapatang Pantao tungo sa Kalinaw.” PEACEtahan 2008 is a Song and Music Video Contest, Infomercial Contest, and Poster Making Contest. The activities hope to instill among the participants the role that they can play in the peaceful resolution of conflicts, rather than resorting to violent means. With this contest, Sulong CARHRIHL hopes to increase youth participation on peacebuilding specifically in the enduring war between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF). Sulong CARHRIHL believes that such activities are effective means of raising awareness on issues such as peace and human rights. PEACEtahan 2008 is a venue that allows not only the opportunity for the youth to learn but also be involve in advocating peaceful means to resolve conflict.

Objectives of the Event

Sulong CARHRIHL Youth hosts PEACEtahan 2008 with the following objectives:

1. to promote peace directed principally on human rights, international humanitarian law, and CARHRIHL among the youth by providing a channel through which they will be able to express their thoughts and ideas regarding peace and conflict issues;

2. to encourage youth involvement and participation in peacebuilding;

3. to tap potential peace advocates.

  1. I have read stories about victims of human rights violations, some are in newspapers and others are in books. I am too much affected, since i am aware of the government’s program against insurgencies, its effect to civilians and other related issues. i have also read the ‘Alston Report’, pointing the government, its armed forces and paramilitary groups as perpetrators of human rights violations…

    i just want to inquire, how exactly extensive is your advocacy regarding human rights violations in relation to peace?

    i believe, as what i have read in your website, you are doing documentation about these matters, for what? because i have also read that you are not going to file any case as a third party (sort of monitoring), should there be violations to human rights.

    so what do you do in order to promote peace?

    i am interested to join in your poster making contest…but i want first to know more about this..

    thank you.

  2. emman,

    the sulong carhrihl is a partnership of human rights and peace advocates serving as the national network.

    in this context, we are currently in the process of developing documentation tools with carhrihl perspective for human rights abuse and violation documentation. we are helping in documentation work to help set the data bank of human rights violation.

    in cases of legal actions to be taken, sulong carhrihl directs the victims to partner NGO’s and lawyer’s network to provide them legal remedies for their specific cases. this is to avoid duplication of actions and also in recognition of tasks to be taken by the partners.

    the main focus of sulong carhrihl is to mainstream the advocacy for carhrihl as well as the three other agenda. the carhrihl is the foundation for the other agenda.

    in the communities, we conduct capacity building and education work to empower the common people for their self-initiated advocacies for peace and human rights.
    we are now helping indigenous people who are vulnerable because of the proximity of their communities in conflict areas. we are also helping local media to develop human rights, peace and and carhrihl lens in news reporting.

    the youth network is also important to develop young people’s engagement and involvement for peace and human rights. the peacetahan 2008 aims to creatively engage them in the advocacy.
