PEACEtahan rocks out Penguin!

October 29, 2007

Whoever said the young don’t know what’s what? Sulong Youth is on a mission to rattle up the ranks and prove them wrong. PEACEtahan 2008, Sulong’s peace awareness campaign, is on the roll. Far from the regular flag-waving, bead-bearing, flowers-in-your-hair brand of peace – Sulong calls for justice, respect for human rights, and resolution of the enduring conflict between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front (NDF).

Through a lecture-concert tour of different cafés and bars in Manila, Cebu, and Davao, a multimedia contest, and consciousness-raising exhibits in schools and universities nationwide, PEACEtahan hopes to stir up young Filipinos to pay heed to the conflict and its effects on the lives of ordinary civilians caught between the two parties at war.

The newly-formed Sulong CARHRIHL Youth Network spearheads the CARHRIHL and peace advocacy among the youth, and PEACEtahan is its first national campaign. The network includes DAKILA (Philippine Collective for Modern Heroism), Pax Christi-Miriam College, PNU-UNESCO Club, PNU Social Science Club, UP Anthropology Society, UP Politica, UP Sidlangan, UP Red Cross Youth, and Generation Peace. PEACEtahan hits the Penguin Bar in Malate on October 26, Cebu on November 16, and Mag:net Gallery Katipunan on December 14.

Inday peace text messages

July 26, 2007

“Inday”, the ubiquitous Pinay housekeeper, has turned into an instant celebrity because of the recent deluge of text messages from all over the Philippines. These witty, sometimes snarky, and always amusing epiphanies of hers sound off on the issues of the day – from capitalism during the Christmas season, to explaining the psychological benefits of a day off, to changes in the weather patterns wreaking havoc on her backyard sweeping.

This September, let’s see what Inday has to say about conflict, human rights, and peace.

“Conflict is a product of differing beliefs, worldviews, and goals. Unless the parties in conflict resolve their issues in a peaceful way through a compromise of positions, this may boil over into aggressive hostility, which will by no means signify the end of the conflict, but the beginning of a vicious cycle of violence.”

– sabi ni Inday habang inaawat ang dalawang alagang nag-aaway.

***

“The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that ‘No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.’ With that, sir, I concur respectfully.”

– sabi ni Inday nang sya’y nag-resign.

***

“The traditional political definition of peace originated among the ancient Romans who defined peace, ‘pax’, as absentia belli, the absence of war. This conception of peace as mere absence of overt violence, however, is still challenged by some as incomplete. Suggestions that underlying points of conflict must themselves be resolved in order for true peace to exist.”

– sabi ni Inday sa boss na ini-isnab ni Misis dahil nakalimutan ang birthday nya.
