Whoever said the young don’t know what’s what? Sulong Youth is on a mission to rattle up the ranks and prove them wrong. PEACEtahan 2008, Sulong’s peace awareness campaign, is on the roll. Far from the regular flag-waving, bead-bearing, flowers-in-your-hair brand of peace – Sulong calls for justice, respect for human rights, and resolution of the enduring conflict between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front (NDF).
Through a lecture-concert tour of different cafés and bars in Manila, Cebu, and Davao, a multimedia contest, and consciousness-raising exhibits in schools and universities nationwide, PEACEtahan hopes to stir up young Filipinos to pay heed to the conflict and its effects on the lives of ordinary civilians caught between the two parties at war.
The newly-formed Sulong CARHRIHL Youth Network spearheads the CARHRIHL and peace advocacy among the youth, and PEACEtahan is its first national campaign. The network includes DAKILA (Philippine Collective for Modern Heroism), Pax Christi-Miriam College, PNU-UNESCO Club, PNU Social Science Club, UP Anthropology Society, UP Politica, UP Sidlangan, UP Red Cross Youth, and Generation Peace. PEACEtahan hits the Penguin Bar in Malate on October 26, Cebu on November 16, and Mag:net Gallery Katipunan on December 14.
